Bombshell Will Ruffle Feathers

About time

Bombshell is coming out in December and I can’t wait for it to ruffle some feathers. This film is about several women, working at Fox News, who set out to the lift the lid on Roger Ailes, the company CEO, for his sexual harassment and despicable behaviour.

This film stars Nicole Kidman as Gretchen Carlson, Charlize Theron who looks unrecognisable as Megyn Kelly and Margot Robbie as a fictional character named Kayla. Firstly, wow – that’s a serious trio of acting talent and that alone made me curious. John Lithgow slaps on the fat suit here too as he stars as Ailes. However, what might be the biggest draw is the fact that this is written by Charles Randolph who also penned The Big Short (2015). If we get a script that is comparable to that, then I’ll be very happy. I was a massive fan of how The Big Short tackled a massive historical yet dark event in history, but simultaneously maintained a balance with comedic elements to really poke fun at how ridiculous that real life event really was.

Let’s be up front here, this movie will deal with difficult themes too. It looks like it will explore sexual exploitation, sexist hierarchies, and toxic forms of superiority. However, it very much seems that this will be a movie of these women fighting back against this creep and all his bullshit. In the era we’re now living in, justice is being served against people who got away with these misdemeanours for so long and it will be cathartic for so many to see them get their comeuppance in a full length feature film. It’s only a matter of time before we get a movie on Harvey Weinstein.

I hope this doesn’t come across in the wrong way, but I hope this movie doesn’t end up taking itself too seriously. As I mentioned before, The Big Short was great because it acknowledged how insane the stuff it was dealing with actually was. And I think the same can be said, to a certain extent, about this subject matter. I mean point blank – Fox News are a bunch of weirdos. There’s no other way to put it, but some of the content they put out is just crazy. They spew a lot of nonsense and hatred. Kate McKinnon at the beginning of the trailer is giving the brief that every Fox News story must scare your grandmother and piss off your grandfather. That’s a funny line, but I wouldn’t be surprised one bit if that’s what they actually told their employees to think like.

Then there’s the brief quote with Donald Trump who discusses a female news presenter in a completely misogynistic and disrespectful way when he talks about her being angry because she’s on her period. This is great writing by Randolph – oh wait, Trump actually said this.

Look – Trump is weird and ridiculous, Fox News is weird and ridiculous, Roger Ailes was weird and a creep. Let’s reveal the truth behind this machine and poke a bit of fun at them while doing it.
